Vocabulary and LingQ Widget 2.0

To inspire more LingQing this holiday season we have just pushed a major new update to the site! You will see major changes to the LingQ widget and a completely revamped Vocabulary page.

You will see the new LingQ widget right away when you click Check Dictionary from the blue new words popup. We have now added the ability to add an image, an audio file in addition to Text-To-Speech and a separate tab for Notes. Notice that there are now tabs under the Status bar for Dictionaries, Examples, User Hints, Ask a Tutor, Notes and Audio.

Widget4

All dictionary results are now integrated into the LingQ widget and show in a separate window underneath the main widget area. This is your Dictionaries tab. Initially Google Translate and Babylon options are available. Just click on the buttons to view the results. Additional resources can be added by clicking the Add Resource button. You can then add from the list of dictionaries/resources available and choose the language to translate into for each resource. Examples, User Hints and Ask a Tutor are pretty self explanatory and function as they did before, although for Ask a Tutor you can now see any existing threads and post new questions right there in the widget. Finally, the Notes and Audio tabs allow the input of notes and audio for each LingQ. Uploaded audio will play in addition to the Text-To-Speech.

One other aspect of the LingQ widget is the status bar which has been revamped throughout the site. It now shows the same colours as the shading on the lesson page. The different shades of yellow for status 1 to 3 and no shading for status 4. As well, the ignore and delete controls have been combined into a red x or status x. We have struggled with how best to deal with deleted and ignored words and have decided that essentially they can be treated the same. These words are completely removed from your database and ignored. However, as always, you can create a LingQ for them anytime to add them back.

The last thing you will notice on the LingQ widget is a new language identifier for Hints. You will now see the flag of your Hint language. This should be your native language or dictionary language, however, sometimes this language can be incorrect. This allows you to set your hint language correctly and to have multiple hints in multiple languages for your LingQs. It is important that hint languages be correct to prevent hints in other languages from getting mixed up in the user hints displayed on the blue popups.

The other major changes occurred on the Vocabulary page, which has been completely updated. The controls have been updated and streamlined and the list itself has been changed to accommodate the new changes to the widget. Among other things, you can now change the status of the words in your list with the 1-click status bar. As well, we have added two new ways to review your vocabulary - Multiple Choice and Dictation! A little something to while away the time during the holidays...!

Vocab3

You will also notice an improved SRS system. We have reworked our SRS algorithm so you will review the LingQs you are learning in 7 stages from 1 day to 3 months apart. These will be emailed out in your LingQs of the Day, based on your email settings as they are now. You can also find all your words due for review in the Due for Review (SRS) tab on the Vocabulary page. This more comprehensive SRS system will now ensure that you always have a full list in your daily email if you have words waiting for review.

Finally, with this update we have re-implemented the 1-Click Google Translate on the blue popups. However, since we must now pay Google for this service it is now a premium feature and not available to Free members.

Let us know how you like the updates. Think of the changes as an early Christmas present... ;-)

Quick Ignore and Make Known Functions for Blue Words

1click

We have just pushed a small update to help speed up LingQing. For those of you who regularly Ignore or make Known individual words, you can now click on a blue word and you will see two small controls directly on the word itself. Click the red "x" to Ignore the word so it won't be included in your database or statistics. Or, you can click the blue tick mark to add the word to your Known words list. Of course, it is still fastest to make all remaining blue words Known by clicking the LingQ'd button but for those who prefer dealing with each word individually, these two small changes should make your LingQing that much more efficient.
Enjoy and tell us what you think about this update!

Tutor Rating System, Active Lesson, Updated Friends Search

We have just made another update to the site, including some exciting changes!

Tutor Rating System

We have now added the functionality to rate tutors on LingQ. We hope this will not only make it easier for students to select a reputable tutor, but also inspire tutors to keep doing an excellent job. You can now able to rate tutors for both discussions and writing corrections. Simply open up a conversation report or writing report and submit your ratings on the right-hand side of the page.

Active Lesson

To make it easier to resume a lesson that you were studying, we have now added the "Active Lesson" button at the top-right of the page. Simply click this button to return to your most recent active lesson in that language. Now it will be much easier to navigate away from a lesson and return back to it with just one simple click. We hope this adds some motivation to keep you LingQing!

Updated Friends Search

We have now redesigned the Friends search page to make it easier to search for both friends and tutors. The filters have been moved to the right and some additional options have also been added. You will also notice that ratings now appear on this page, so selecting a writing corrector or a tutor will also be much easier.

We hope you all enjoy these new changes! As always, we welcome your feedback.

Lesson Notes

We just pushed another update to the Lessons. We have added a dedicated Lesson Notes tab for each lesson. These will appear in the Resource tabs along with Videos, Translations, etc.. A lesson provider or editor can add these in the Edit Lesson screen just like adding a Translation. We hope this will offer an easier to access way of adding and viewing lesson notes. Content contributors - please start adding notes!

New Improved Blue Popup

We have just pushed a new and improved blue popup to the lesson page. Make sure to refresh your browser to clear your cache, then when you hover on a blue word you will see the following changes:

  • The Known button is now in the top right corner
  • A new "Ignore" button to the left of the Known button which means this word will not be included in your statistics at all
  • The User Hints buttons are now more clearly identified as buttons with a plus symbol on them to make it more obvious that they should be clicked.
  • Google Translate has been integrated into a button so that if there are not at least 3 User Hints, the Google Translate translation can be chosen
  • The "Add New Hint/Check Dictionary" button is at the bottom of the list of User Hints and has the Search Dictionary icon on it

We hope you like these changes. We think the popup is clearer now and the additional functionality makes it even more powerful than it was before. Let us know what you think!

Create LingQs Quickly, Videos, Translations, Text-to-Speech

Lesson Resources, Quick LingQ

We are pleased to launch a major new upgrade to the Lesson page.

You'll immediately notice a new tabbed window on the right side of the lesson page. The Tasks tab shows the Task List, of course.

This is a better way to access your tasks.

In the next tab, the feature that we're most proud of is our new Quick LingQ which reloads the page and shows all of your blue words in a list or Quick LingQ View. This view allows you to more efficiently create LingQs and/or make words Known. Of course, you can still click the I Know All button at any time to make all remaining words Known. You will notice that when you are looking at the Quick LingQ list the text of the lesson does not have any highlighting. You are therefore able to copy and paste from the text while using Quick LingQ which will make many of you happy we're sure! Returning to the standard view is as simple as clicking the link on the left of the page.

The third tab, Resources, lists notes and comments about the lesson, video tutorials (if available), translations (if available), and script conversions (if available) for the lesson. There is a corresponding place on the edit lesson page in the Advanced Settings area where Youtube videos, translation texts and script conversions can be entered by the content provider or editor. There may not be many resources implemented right away but we will be adding resources once this feature is up and we hope those of you who share content will do the same for your lessons and those of you who are editors will do the same as well. Again, let us know if you would like to be an editor in any language so you can start adding resources.

Clicking on the Share tab will allow you to email the lesson or share it via Facebook or Twitter.

Lesson2

Text-to-Speech on Flashcards

You will also now notice the addition of text-to-speech on the flashcards. Click on the speaker icon to hear the word pronounced. Enjoy this much requested feature! Unfortunately, this functionality is not yet available for Asian languages.

Import Resources, Friends' Activities

Finally, we have added a place on the Import page where we will be listing good sites for finding imported content. We will be adding resources to this list over time and we need your help in finding the best sites. Click on the "Suggest a new resource" link to let us know your favourite sites. The idea is to help all members easily access good sites to import content from, to take advantage of the powerful Import feature.

Finally, we have also added paging on the Friends Activities list and we will be adding the same thing to the Blogs list shortly.

Whew! That's quite a few changes and we haven't listed all the minor fixes. We think these are some significant improvements but we need to hear from you, of course. Tell us what you think!
